lunar polar solar power
A Lunar rail car carrying solar panels is located
at the Lunar pole. A circumpolar railroad lets the
panels always face the sun..
Take a look at http://lifekills.wordpress.com/2009/02/23/space-based-solar-power-and-microwave-transmission/
The moon rotates in 28 days or 572 hours. If you select a latitude with a
circumference of 1144 mile then high noon rotates at 2 miles per hour.
A fixed panel on a train car tracks the sun moving counterclockwise or
toward Lunar east.
p. 772 Mechatronics: an integrated approach By Clarence W. De Silva "When operating at high torque ..., the motor speeds have to be quite low for a given level of power. ... torque motors are particularly suitable for high-precision, direct-drive applications .... Torque motors are widely used as valve actuators in hydraulic servo-valves where large torques and very small displacements are required ..."
The following describe an electric motor developed
at Morgan Precon Inc. A division of Morgan Power Apparatus
subcontracted by Westinghouse to drive valve actuators
in nuclear power plants:
A ring gear with 360 vertical and radial teeth about one
centermeter radially and tapered vertially 3/4 centimeter.
Placed at the upper edge of a sturdy metal canister and
surrounding 6 electromagnets with surfaces following a
shallow cone and potted in valox and allowing
a central drive shaft.
The drive shaft attached to 6 way toggling bushing and
a matching radial toothed gear around a similarly conical
and magneticallly permeable metal. This gear however has
361 teeth.
As the first magnet is activated the upper gear's teeth mesh
\with the lower. After the sixth the upper gear has advanced
one tooth. Continuing this process the upper gear rotates the
drive shaft. Torque is very immediate and sustained.
Stopping with gears meshed is also definite. Free wheeling
is with gears unmeshed.
Vehicles with such motors at each wheel drive horizontal
and vertical boring equipment, simalarily driven, across
the lunar terrain.
Suppose during some revolution that the torque is insufficient for
the load. One or both of two things must occur: i. The gears disengage
and the order the electromagnets magnetize is reversed ii. The order of
the magnetization is reversed and the gears disengage
Such a circumstance may be regulated by monitoring the characteristic
clatter of the drive gear.
